What causes window film thermal stress?
Applied film increases how much solar energy the glass absorbs. When part of a lite is hot and part is shaded or held cool by the frame, the resulting differential expansion creates stress. Annealed monolithic glass with partial shading has the least tolerance for it; heat-strengthened and tempered glass have far more.
The classic failure condition is an annealed lite with a shadow line across it — a canopy, a column, a neighbouring building, or interior furniture pressed against the glass. The hot area expands, the cool area does not, and the stress concentrates at the edge.
Glass edge quality matters as much as glass type. A damaged or poorly finished edge is where a thermally stressed lite fails first, which is why edge condition is part of the survey.
Manufacturers publish guidance on film and glass combinations for exactly this reason. Where a combination falls outside it, the correct response is a different film — or declining the opening — not a disclaimer.
Factors in a thermal stress review
- Glass type and strengthening — annealed, heat-strengthened, tempered
- Monolithic versus insulating unit construction
- Solar absorption of the proposed film
- Partial shading from canopies, columns or adjacent buildings
- Interior obstructions held close to the glass
- Glass edge condition and existing damage
