Glare Reduction Window Film

Glare is a visible-light problem, which means visible light transmission is the number that governs it — not total solar rejection, and not how expensive the film is.

The design work is finding how low VLT can go before the floor feels dim on a gray December morning. If glare is the main complaint, the darkest film is not automatically the right film.

Read the blinds

The most reliable diagnostic in a commercial office is the blind line. If every blind on an elevation is down at eleven in the morning and stays down, that elevation has a glare problem and the building has already given up its daylight to solve it.

Film reverses that trade: it cuts the glare at the glass so the blinds can go back up and the space keeps its view and its borrowed light.

Selecting a visible light level

We survey by exposure rather than by floor. The correct film on a west elevation is frequently the wrong film on the north face of the same building, and treating both the same way is how a floor ends up dim on one side and still glaring on the other.

Monitor orientation, ceiling height, interior finishes and how far the workstations sit from the glass all move the answer. So does whether the space is used at 8am or 4pm.

  • Existing blinds, shades and how they are used
  • Interior daylight the space cannot afford to lose
  • Landlord or design-review limits on exterior appearance

Where glare and heat separate

Sometimes the same film solves both, and sometimes it does not. A high-VLT spectrally selective film can strip a large share of the heat and still leave a low sun on the horizon glaring straight into a monitor, because low winter sun is a geometry problem film cannot fully solve.

In those cases the honest answer is film plus a shading device on a few bays, and we would rather scope that than sell a darker film that makes the whole floor gloomy.

Common questions

Straight answers

How dark does office window film need to be?
Only as dark as the glare requires. Lower visible light transmission means more glare control and less daylight, so the level is set from how the space is used across the day rather than from the worst hour of the year.
Will film fix low-angle sun glare completely?
It reduces it substantially but cannot eliminate direct low-angle sun into a monitor. Where that geometry exists we say so and scope a shading device for those bays rather than over-darkening the whole elevation.
Can one film handle glare and heat together?
Often, yes — spectrally selective products are designed for exactly that balance. Whether one product covers both is settled during survey against the glass and the exposure.
