Film only versus film plus attachment
Film-only installation bonds the broken fragments together and keeps the glass in one piece. It is appropriate where fragment retention and occupant safety are the goal.
Film plus perimeter attachment anchors the filmed lite to the frame, so the glazing cannot be pushed out of the opening as an intact sheet. Where forced-entry delay is the objective, this is the difference that matters — most of the usable delay comes from the attachment.
How an attachment system is selected
- Frame material, glazing bite depth and condition
- Whether the pocket can carry a structural wet-glaze bead
- Whether a mechanically fastened profile is acceptable visually
- Glass type and unit construction behind the film
- The threat and the level of delay the owner is scoping for
Attachment terminology and system components must be taken from current 3M documentation for the specific products used on that project.
