Knowledge base
Answers a facility manager can act on.
Short, direct answers to the questions that actually come up in a commercial film decision — budgets, glass compatibility, security limits, installation logistics and the terminology on a spec sheet. No pricing fiction, no performance claims we cannot source.
Cost & budgeting
- How much does commercial window film cost?Commercial window film is priced per square foot of glass, but the rate varies widely by product family and access.
- How should a facility manager budget a window film project?Budget by elevation rather than by building, and get a survey before the number goes into a capital request.
- Can commercial window film reduce AC load?Solar control film reduces the solar heat gain entering through the glass, and that reduces the portion of the cooling load created by that gain.
Product selection
- How do you select window film for an office?Start with the complaint, not the product.
- What is spectrally selective window film?Spectrally selective film is engineered to treat different parts of the solar spectrum differently — rejecting a large share of near-infrared energy while allowing most visible light through.
- What is the difference between ceramic and reflective window film?Ceramic films use non-metallized ceramic particles and read neutrally, holding their color and not interfering with signal.
- What is 3M Prestige window film?3M Prestige is a non-metallized multilayer optical film built from many polymer layers engineered to reject infrared energy while passing visible light.
- What is 3M Night Vision window film?3M Night Vision is a dual-reflective construction — more reflective on the exterior face for daytime screening and solar rejection, less reflective on the interior so occupants keep the view out after dark instead of facing a mirror.
- What is 3M FASARA?3M FASARA is a library of decorative architectural glass finishes: frosts, linens, rice papers, textures, geometrics and gradients applied to interior glass.
- Does reflective window film work at night? No.
Glass & compatibility
- Can window film go on Low-E glass?Often yes, but not with every film and not on every unit.
- Can window film go on insulated glass?Yes, in many cases — but insulating glass units require a compatibility review before a film is selected.
- Can window film be installed on tempered glass?Yes.
- What causes window film thermal stress?Applied film increases how much solar energy the glass absorbs.
- Can window film be installed on curtain wall?Yes — curtain wall is one of the most common commercial applications.
Security
- Is security window film bulletproof? No.
- What is the difference between security film and ballistic glass?Security film is a retrofit applied to existing glazing to retain fragments and delay forced entry.
- What is a window film attachment system? An attachment system bonds or fastens the filmed glass to the window frame around its perimeter, so the filmed lite cannot be pushed out of the opening as an intact sheet.
Installation
Terminology
- What is VLT?VLT — visible light transmission — is the percentage of visible light that passes through the glass and film assembly.
- What is TSER?TSER — total solar energy rejected — is the percentage of incident solar energy across ultraviolet, visible and infrared wavelengths rejected by the glass and film assembly together.
- What is SHGC?SHGC — solar heat gain coefficient — is the fraction of incident solar radiation admitted through the glazing assembly, expressed between 0 and 1.
