3M Ceramic Architectural Series

The Ceramic Architectural Series is 3M's ceramic-based solar control construction, offered across a range of visible light levels. It is non-metallized, so it does not carry the signal-interference concerns associated with metallized film.

It is an interior-applied film intended for solar heat and glare control, with low reflectivity, so it changes the appearance of the facade far less than a dual-reflective product.

Where ceramic sits between Prestige and reflective film

Prestige is a multilayer optical construction built to reject solar energy while keeping the glass looking close to untreated. Dual-reflective films such as Night Vision accept a visible facade change in exchange for strong daytime screening. Ceramic films sit between the two: darker options are available where the tint is acceptable, and lighter options where it is not.

The right choice is a function of the glass, the orientation, the budget and how much appearance change the building or the landlord will accept — not a ranking of one family over another.

Where it belongs

Tenant office floors, school and municipal buildings, clinical support space, back-of-house areas and any elevation where the complaint is heat and glare rather than appearance.

It is also the practical answer on large multi-building portfolios where the specification has to be repeatable and the budget has to survive several phases.

Selection inputs we need

  • Existing glass construction — single, insulated, Low-E, tinted, laminated
  • Elevation and orientation of the affected glass
  • Acceptable visible light transmission range
  • Whether adjacent untreated glass has to visually match
  • Interior or exterior application constraints

Compatibility and thermal stress

Every solar film changes how much energy the glass absorbs, so the film has to be checked against the glass construction, edge condition, size and shading before it is specified. That check happens during the site survey, not after installation.

Insulated and Low-E units in particular need the film matched to the glass makeup. We document what is on each elevation at closeout so later phases can match the same product.

How is ceramic film different from Prestige?
