Can window film be installed on tempered glass?
Yes. Tempered glass is heat-treated and carries considerably more thermal-stress headroom than annealed glass, which widens the range of films that can be applied safely. Unit construction, coatings and warranty terms still need review, but tempered glazing is generally the least restrictive substrate.
The reason thermal stress matters at all is that applied film increases solar absorption in the glass, and annealed monolithic glass with partial shading has very little margin. Tempering removes most of that concern.
Tempered glass also fractures into small pieces rather than shards, which changes the safety conversation — a filmed tempered lite behaves differently under impact from a filmed annealed one.
None of this removes the need to identify the glass. Buildings routinely contain tempered, heat-strengthened and annealed glass in the same elevation.
