Can window film go on insulated glass?
Yes, in many cases — but insulating glass units require a compatibility review before a film is selected. Unit construction, the type and strengthening of each lite, seal condition, shading and the glazing warranty all bear on whether an absorptive film is appropriate on that unit.
An insulating unit responds to added solar absorption differently from a monolithic lite, because the sealed cavity changes how heat is retained and how the glass expands. That is why the film choice on an IGU is narrower than on single glazing.
Seal condition matters too. A unit with a failed seal has a bigger problem than glare, and applying film to it hides nothing and fixes nothing.
The review is quick when the glass can be identified in the field, and slower when it cannot — which is why we ask for glazing schedules on projects where they exist.
