What is spectrally selective window film?
Spectrally selective film is engineered to treat different parts of the solar spectrum differently — rejecting a large share of near-infrared energy while allowing most visible light through. The result is meaningful heat reduction with far less change to daylight and appearance than a conventional tinted or reflective film.
Sunlight arrives as ultraviolet, visible light and infrared. A dyed or reflective film reduces all of it roughly together, which is why heavy heat reduction historically meant a dark or mirrored building. Spectrally selective constructions break that link.
For commercial work that matters because the two things buyers protect most — daylight and facade appearance — are exactly what conventional solar film costs them. It is why these products dominate Class A office specifications despite a higher material price.
They are not magic. At a given visible light level a more reflective product will still reject more total energy, and on already high-performance Low-E glazing the incremental gain is smaller. The right comparison is always product-on-your-glass, from current manufacturer data.
